A peek inside the mind of BLAP
  • [Wintersalt Artist Spotlight] PAPER DIAMOND

Puff, puff, bass– a phrase used to define that moment when the frequency of one of DJ/Producer Alex Botwin aka Paper Diamond’s tracks start to resonate a soundsystem. Through his early adventures into the sounds of electro-hiphop blends, PD has helped pave the way for the ever-growing “West Coast Bass” movement, touching on the various aspects dubstep, reggae, moombahton, and trap.

The Colorado native began to blaze his trail under the umbrella of the now infamous Pretty Lights Music label in 2010, when he burst onto the scene with Move Ya Body feat. B.L.A.M. and Julexa (produced at the time alongside fellow PLM member Gramatik.)
Paper Diamond continued his accent through the forward-thinking, bass bending crusades with his 2011 album, Levitate. The eight track release featured the head knocker “From Now Till…” which incorporated Shirley Bassey’s “Diamonds Are Forever” sample (also more commonly associated with Kanye West’s “Diamonds from Sierra Leone”) and was perhaps Paper Diamond’s way of telling the music world he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

As Paper Diamond’s name began to appear on the 2012 festival circuits including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Electric Zoo, Camp Bisco, Electric Forest & Lightning in a Bottle, it was clear that Diamond was ready for his Airlift intro – into the ranks of today’s top bass music DJs. His release and premiere EP on Mad Decent Wavesight – made even the most anti-dubstep activists aware that genre stereotypes were a thing of the past.

Paper Diamond has continued his genre crossing and even pop-world infiltrating productions with remixes of Kanye West’s “Power”, his moombahton take on Usher and Diplo’s “Climax” and trapstyle “40 Thieves” track that was featured in Jay-Z’s Life + Times blog.

In August, PD launched the Elm And Oak Academy: a “Design Shop” aimed at providing lessons and workshops in music production & business, as well as an outlet for his team to release records, clothing, and to nurture development of the culture surrounding the new sound.

We are very excited to have Paper Diamond’s basslines bless our chests on the massive subs being prepared for Wintersalt Music Festival this coming NYE weekend, taking place at the beautiful bay front venue, Fort Mason, in San Francisco.

    1. Weather Forecast: HOT!!!

Wintersalt Music & Arts Fest will take place inside Fort Mason Center’s heated Festival Pavilion with absolutely zero chance of rain, sleet, hail, or snow. With over 50,000 square feet of space inside the pavilion, there will be plenty of room to see all of the world renowned Wintersalt talent without worrying about mother nature. Who knows, it might even be warm outside in the city!!! “@wintersaltsf frisco we keep it hot #microclimates

    2. World. Renowned. Talent.

With trendsetting artists like Diplo and Theophilus London, legendary figures like Travis Barker, Mixmaster Mike, DJ Shadow and Lyrics Born, to some of the hottest new names in the game like Zedd, Dillon Francis, Revolvr, K.Flay, K.Theory, Viceroy, St Lucia, and more, Wintersalt boasts some of the boldest and brightest performers from around the globe.

    3. #Money #Money #Money

The lineup is big. But the price tag isn’t going to break your bank. Currently, you can grab single day tickets for $55 or only $89 for a two day pass (prices going up soon).

Note: If Diplo was playing a solo headliner show in SF, the ticket price would be at least $35 to $40 plus some sort of Ticketmaster “convenience” fee to add on top of that. If Zedd was playing a solo gig somewhere you’d be dealing with the same thing or more. Same goes for Travis Barker, DJ Shadow, Theophilus London, Dillon Francis, Paper Diamond, etc. So, how about all of these great acts and more (+ awesome local talents) in the same place #NYEweekend for only a few bucks more than what it would cost to see just one of them? 🙂

    4. Get “Artsy” with us.

Wintersalt will feature some major art installations by some of the most skilled artists in the country as well as some highly acclaimed local standouts. Co-Presented by TOTT global who’s curated everything from local studios in SF to shows in NYC to the world famous Art Basel in Miami. Artists to be announced soon…

    5. Location, Location, Location.

Wintersalt 2012 will take place at historic Fort Mason’s Festival Pavilion, located on the waters edge of the SF Bay and overlooks both Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. Wintersalt attendees will be able to catch their breath outside on the piers surrounding the venue and take in these world famous views before going back in for more music!

    6. Feed me!

Summatime is in full effect in the whale’s pumpum, and we have 3 unique shows this weekend, all covering the various aspects of today’s bass music.

To begin, BLAP Productions is very proud and excited to be doing our first official show in SD, as we partner up with our homies over at Party Naked this Thursday at Typhoon Saloon to bring you ROBOTIC PIRATE MONKEY.

And no, RPM is not a sex move, but could be. RPM offers a wide range of both original productions and crossover remixes, and the trio bring a ton of energy to every live performance.

To give you an idea of the what to expect,

    imagine this:

GONNA BE DOPE! RPM is on a big tour around the west coast right now, has a brand new album dropping this month called HEAT.WAV, and just recently released their Color’s in Disguise Remixed LP with some of the best in the bass business. Openers include SD’s finest with BLAYNEDEAD (Bass Tribe/Elev8), OSCAR WYLDE (SD/LV), and the going away party for our big homie NOLD as he moves to LA to get a bit more shifty. Get there early, Typhoon gets packed and you don’t want to miss this performance.

Here’s a nice BLAP-PACK (all free DL!) to get you a little more familiar:

After a nice relaxing Friday break (yeah…),  another special treat comes over to us from the Fresh Bakin’ camp, as they come in swinging Saturday night in Hillcrest at The Ruby Room with Minnesota, Russ Liquid, VybeSquad and DJ Carlo.

For those of you that don’t know, Minnesota has been on a tear over the past months, quickly becoming an artist on the tip of everyone’s tongue in discussions about west coast bass music. His performance at LIB was nothing short of epic, and we cannot say enough about Minnesota’s multi-layered and dimensioned production skills.   I said MY ROOF BACK, she said MY MONEY RIGHT.

To top things off, DroptheBeatSD is continuing their #AddictedtoMusic series with a MOOMBAH/TRAP evening at 4th&B on Sunday featuring the BROS GONE WILD TOUR with Bro Safari, Tittsworth, Torro Torro, and Sazon Booya on the main stage and word on the street is there will be an additional side TARP room to put even your best track dealer in check.

Here’s a quick preview of the BROS own productions and remixes, but don’t get it twisted – the group of DJs/producers who you will see perform Sunday have the newest and most fuego library of global bass music you will find, from moombahton to dubstep to electro to trap to whatever other RATCHET bass music you are into these days. (A PERSONAL PIECE OF ADVICE – TORRO TORRO).

We are very lucky to have this eclectic set of DJ/producers/non-button-pushers on the forefront of taking music into it’s new direction, all in a San Diego weekend’s work. #basspondiweekend

Keep it going SD bass squad, summer is only just getting started.

Searching through some old crates and found one of  MiMosa’s early remixes, “Come Around” by Collie Buddz.
